Where to eat

You can eat well without collecting a long list. Three places cover a week at The Delford or Fern: one you can walk to, one on the docks, and one worth a reservation. Hours, menus, and whether they are even open in your month all change. Call the day you care about. Nothing below is a promise about a table.

Harpoons on the Bay is the close one. It sits on the beach in North Cape May, down the street from The Delford. Casual, bay in front of you, the dinner you choose when the grill at the house can wait. It is the restaurant the Delford listing points to when it says a beachfront place is just down the street. Go early with children. It is not a quiet room at the peak of July.

The Lobster House is at Fisherman’s Wharf in Cape May, about fifteen minutes by car. It is the classic: docks, a raw bar, a dining room that has been there a long time. There is often a wait if you do not plan. The takeout side is the move when you would rather eat crabs on your own deck. Parking is on the wharf. It feels like a working harbor because it is one.

The Ebbitt Room is inside the Virginia Hotel, on Jackson Street in Cape May. This is the dinner you book. Smaller room, a real kitchen, the night someone in the group wants to dress up. It is not the place to wander into at 8 p.m. on a Saturday in August and hope. Reserve it when you reserve the week, or accept that you may not get in.

Everything else can be a walk on Washington Street or a night in. Both houses have a grill, a full kitchen, a dishwasher, and a Keurig. Fern adds a firepit. One dinner out, one dinner from the Lobster House takeout, one dinner you cook: that is a full week, and it leaves the bay sunset free.

We are not these restaurants. We do not take a reservation for them. If you want a glass of wine earlier in the day, the wineries are a separate drive. If you want the ocean-boardwalk version of dinner, that is the Wildwoods, not these three.
